Memories of a hostess : a chronicle of eminent friendships, drawn chiefly from the diaries of Mrs James T Fields . Facsimile note from Booth to Mts. Fields 202 MEMORIES OF A HOSTESS roared again. They are surely a merry race, but pro-voking enough sometimes. They are capable of realattachments, however; this man has been severaltimes dismissed but will not go. Booth told everythingvery dramatically, but I was especially struck with hisdescription of a man travelling with two shaggy terrierpups in the cars. He had them in a basket and hungthem up over his head and then composed himself tosleep.

Booth told everythingvery dramatically, but I was especially struck with hisdescription of a man travelling with two shaggy terrierpups in the cars. He had them in a basket and hungthem up over his head and then composed himself tosleep. Waking up half an hour later, he observed a manon the opposite side of the car, his eyes starting fromhis head and the very picture of dismay, as if a demonwere looking at him. The owner of the pups, followingthe direction of the mans eyes, looked up and saw thetwo pups had their heads out of the basket. He quietlymade a sign for them to go back and they mans gaze did not apparently slacken, however, but in a moment became still more horrified when thepups again looked out. What s the matter ?
