Heart disease, illustration. Deposits of verrucous (wart-like) thrombi (blood clots) and ulcers of the aortic valve and the aorta results in impaired functions of the affected tissues. The lesions present as thrombi containing hypercoagulated platelets, fibrin and inflammatory cells and deposits. Due to volume overload the left ventricle is significantly enlarged often associated with aortic regurgitation, hypertension and ischemic heart disease.
