Eiffel Tower (centre), Paris, France, satellite image. The Eiffel Tower (Tour Eiffel) is standing on the banks of the River Seine. Across the river is the Chaillot Palace (Palais de Chaillot) and its formal gardens. On the other side of the tower are the Champ de Mars gardens. The Eiffel Tower, completed in 1889, was then the tallest structure in the world at 300 metres high. It now serves as a television transmitter for the Paris region, and is a famous tourist landmark.
