Not for use in Television Not for use in Television Carpal tunnel syndrome. Wasting of the thenar muscles in the left hand of a male patient suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome. The thenar muscles are the abductor and flexor muscles of the thumb. Here, these muscles have wasted leaving a depression below the thumb. Carpal tunnel syndrome results from pressure on a nerve which passes into the hand via a gap (the carpal tunnel ) under these ligaments of the wrist. Impulses from the blocked nerve cause numbness, muscle weakness, tingling and pain in the fingers. The syndrome may occur in arthritis or acromegaly, or be caused by trauma to the hands in repetitive strain injury (RSI).
