A great many of these varieties have been discarded long ago, yet included in this list aresomeof the most distinct and desirable kinds of the present day. .\lbida and festiva maxima, of all the whites, stand in greatest demand to-day, festiva maxima being the greatest favorite for cut flowers of its color and highest in price. In purples Charles Gosselin and Louis Van Houtte are equalled by few and surpassed by none. They are superior. In pinks Pottsii rosea, Triumph du Nord and rosea versicolor are as good and superior to many of the newest productions. So-called new varie- ties are adding very much to the con- fusion and perplexity of the nomenclature. Manv of the new vaneties, so-called, are not distinct enough from some of the older kinds. Festiva maxima, being a superior variety, has been taken and re-named as new kinds to share its popu- larity. They are, however, only synonyms with the high-sounding names. Another instance: The true chrysanthemumi- flora is pure white with yellow center. We find it, however, described as a pink variety by one, and as a flesh- colored variety by another grower.
