The Assumption Cathedral - also known as the Dormition or Uspensky Cathedral (1672-1682) inside the Kremlin of Kolomna, Russia

Both the greatness and beauty of Dormition Cathedral are very eye-catching. It is not just an architectural monument; it is a symbol of the heart of ancient Kolomna. The three-dome Cathedral of the Assumption was founded in 1379 by Grand Prince Dmitry Donskoy. This was done after the Russian's first victory over the Golden Horde near the Vozhe River. A year later, in 1380, construction was finished. The Our Lady of Don Icon is the Cathedral's main sacred object. Dmitry Donskoy took it to war with him. It accompanied the Grand Prince during his feat of arms in the Battle of Kulikovo. Tsar Ivan the Terrible also prayed to the Icon before he began his Kazan campaign. The Cathedral was a wonderful Moscow style monument of the 14th and the 15th centuries. From 1565 till the end of the 17th century, all Kolomna bishops were buried in the Cathedral. Being founded by Dmitry Donskoy, the Cathedral existed until 1772. In 1772, Archbishop Joseph of Kolomna and Kashirskoye commanded to demolish the dilapidated cathedral. In the next ten years, a new church with five domes was constructed. It was consecrated by Platon Levshin, Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna, who was a prominent hierarch of the Russian Church. In 1880, the 500th Anniversary of the Battle of Kulikovo was celebrated in the Cathedral. The year of 1929 was fatal for the temple. The Cathedral was shut down and looted. The tombs of Kolomna priests were destroyed. It was not until 1989, after sixty shameless years, that the Cathedral was handed over to the believers. The ancient Kolomna sacred place was reborn. On 29 August 1999, the fully restored cathedral was consecrated by Holy Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia. One thousand and a half square meters (16,145 sq. ft) of wall paintings were reconstituted. Dormition Cathedral returned to its original splendor and grandeur.
