Cockerill Engine.—In conjunction with Dr. Diesel, 230 DIESEL ENGINES EOR LAND AND MARINE WORK Messrs. CockeriU, of Seraing, have produced a design of en-gine which is built in relatively large sizes, and is indeed notspecially suited for smaller motors. It is of the two-cycleeingle-acting type, but up to the present the engines whichhave been constructed have been non-reversible, althoughdirectly reversible motors are now being built. The reasonfor the adoption of a non-reversible type was solely onaccount of the ship in which the engines were installed beingdestined for West Africa, and the consequent desirabilityof the absence of as many new features as possible. In the arrangement of the motor of 650 at 280revolutions per minute, there are four working cylinderswith a scavenge pump at each end. Outside each of theseare the high and intermediate pressure stages of the airpumps for injection and star
