METCALF, Harold, physician and surgeon,was born in Providence, November 25, i860, son. HAROLD METCALF. of Levi and Georgiana (Tucker) Metcalf. On hispaternal side his ancestors were early settlers ofDedham, Mass., although for many generations theyhave belonged to Rhode Island. His great-great-grandfather on the maternal side was Daniel Mowry,who was a Member of the Continental Congressin 1781-82. His maternal ancestors are well-known families in North Smithfield and adjacenttowns. He received his early education in thepublic schools and high schools of Providence,and entered Brown University, graduating in theclass of 1884. While in college he taught eveningschools, was clerk in a hat store, worked on a farmand at other employments. He adopted medicineas a profession and studied in the Harvard MedicalSchool, from which he graduated in 1887 with thedegree of M. D. He was Externe on the surgicalside of the Rhode Island Hospital, and DispensaryPhysician, during his years residence in Providence^ when he removed to Wickford, R. I., and took apractice left vacant by the ill
