Ankylosing spondylitis. Labelled artworks and MRI scan (magnetic resonance imaging, left) of side views of the cervical (neck) spine in ankylosing spondylitis. This form of arthritis causes inflammation and deformation of the spinal joints. The front of the spine is at left in each view, with a normal cervical spine at top right. The vertebrae (C1 to C7) are labelled. A disc subluxion (dislocated spinal joint, C5-C6), diffuse osteopenia (decreased bone density, C3), an epidural haematoma, and anterior and posterior longitudinal ligament calcification are present, with the latter torn. Management of symptoms is with physiotherapy, painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs.
