Monday, January 31st, arrived andwith it the day for the departure toAustralia for futher appointments, re-ceptions and greetings, for Presidentand Sister McKay. Before anyonecould scarcely realize it the week withour Prophet had come and gone. 76 TE KARERE Nearly five hundred people, not onlyfrom Auckland, but those who hadbeen attending the various meetingsaround the tour route, were on handto bid farewell and Godspeed to ourvisitors. The group of Saints was sad, tearful, and yet strangely happy asthey gathered to bid farewell. The lastminute photos were snapped and Presi-dent McKay graciously consented tosign as many autographs as he couldbefore being taken by President Ottleyto be entertained finally with choirnumbers, hakas, action songs, pois, hulas and sa sas by the A last farewell song. There was a marked difference inthe crowd from that of the welcome, although there was still that orderli-ness that had been requested and em-phasized throughout the tour. It wasevident that President and Sister Mc-Kay and President Murdock, as well, had become more than just namesto the people of New Zealand. Theyhad found a secure spot in the heartof each Latter-day Saint, and manynon-members, too, in the short weekthey spent in New Zealand. President Ottley expressed gratitudeat the airport to the Saints for theirwilling compliance with any and allrequests made upon to avoidstrain upon President McKay. It wasa full itinerary and, even with pre-cautions, a strenuous one, but one inwhich President and Sister McKaywere able to really meet the people intheir chapels, in their meeting houses, and even along the side of the roadwhere they gathered. He was able tosee their Maori dances, hear the songsof the choirs, and meet the publicofficials, also,
