Combat Aircraft of the Pacific War. Northrop Corporation first developed the SBD before World War II. It was first flown in July 1935. The Dauntless first entered service in mid-1939 and distinguished itself in the Battle of Midway against Japanese carriers Akagi, Kaga, Soryu and Hiryu. 5936 of these Dauntless aircraft were built and there are only 3 or less remaining in airworthy condition.
