In 1863, 172 of the photographs were exhibited, in large format, at the German Gallery in New Bond Street. This is a plate from " the holy land, egypt, constantinople, athens, etc. etc. a series of forty-eight photographs taken by francis bedford', 1863 taken for ' the Prince of Wales during his Tour in the East, in which, by command, he accompanied his Royal Highness. With descriptive text and introduction by Thompson', 48 Albumen Prints, each approx. 95 by 130mm, each with printed photographer's credit, title and plate number, Day & Son, Limited, London, 1865, which was published as an inexpensive alternative to the large format volume of 1862. Printed on the lower left-hand side of the mount in copperplate is the caption: “Photographed by Francis Bedford during the Tour in the East on which by Command he accompanied His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales”. Francis Bedford was the son of the successful church architect Francis Octavius Bedford. He was christened at St Giles in Camberwell on 11 September 1815. He began his career as an architectural draughtsman and lithographer, before taking up photography in the early 1850s. Within a few years, he was working as a commercial photographer of landscape and architectural views. He helped to found the Royal Photographic Society in 1853.
