In order to determine what influence is exerted by protein on nutrition and the occurrence of gout, Kionka fed hens exclusively on horse meat that had been minced, and freed completely from fat. They were allowed to drink water as desired and soon became accustomed to the compulsory diet. Within a period varying from three to fifteen months they all became affected with gout appearing in three forms. In every case at first the gait became uncertain and difiicult and the affected birds fell often while walking. In the first type of
