Harrier GR7 in hover


RAF Harrier GR7 demonstrating a constant hover using its vectored thrust pointing near vertically down while stowing its undercarriage at the Farnborough International Airshow 2006 . The GR7 Harrier is a single seat attack aircraft capable of both STOL and VSTOL usually used to support troops on a ground attack to attack enemy troops tanks and artillery . It can use laser and GPS guided bombs against buildings Paveway infra red missiles against tanks Maverick cluster munitions and general purpose bombs . If needed it can also be fitted with a camera pod for reconnaissance. The first Harriers entered RAF service in 1969 . The GR7 single combat and T10 dual seater trainer versions are being upgraded to GR9 and TR12 . Both can be used in combat but the GR9A version will have upgraded engines and weapons capability . Engine is one Rolls Royce Pegasus vectored thrust turbofan Mk105 as in the GR7 and Mk107 upgraded . Length 46 feet 4 inches or 14 12 metres Wingspan 30 feet 4 inches or 9 24 metres Top Speed approximately 661 miles per hour or 1065 kilometres per hour Crew of 1 or 2 with All Up Operational Weight Approx 13494 kilogrammes Max Weapon Load 10000 pounds lb or 4500 kilogrammes kg in seven available support positions with ferry range using 4 off drop tanks of about 5382 kilometres km or 3310 miles .
