NEURIT IS OF THE LUMBAB NERVES. 189 of the inability to extend them, due to the complete paralysis of theinterossei. Tjais is the second cause of the deformity produced in thehand. The extension of the middle and end phalanges of the othertwo fingers is also considerably impaired. The adduction and abduc-tion of the fingers is completely abolished and the thumb cannot bebrought forward because of overextension of its first phalanx by theextensor longus pollicis. The sensory disturbances produced by ulnar palsy are tingling andnumbness and possibly pain in the inner half of the hand, in the littlefinger and one-half of the ring finger, and these parsesthesia are usuallyattended by anaesthesia, which may be total in the little finger, but isonly partial in the hand and ring fingers. The sensory disturbance is not always a total one, sensations of tem-perature and pain being very often retained when the sensation oftouch is lost. Trophic disturbances are very liable to occur in theanaest
