Waste water purification plant. Open tanks of the 'Living Machine', an ecologically-friendly water treatment system, at Ethel M's chocolate factory in Las Vegas, USA. The Living Machine mimics natural wetlands to clean up to 80,000 litres of waste water per day. After passing through sealed tanks (not seen) where bad smells are removed, the water enters aerobic reactors (upper centre) where aquatic plants grow. The micro-organisms that live in these communities digest waste and minimise sludge production. The water then passes into clarifying tanks (green, centre) where the microbial life is removed. In the final stage the water is passed through man-made wetlands.
