WITH THE BROWN BEAR look into their cool depths within the is a square, very plain, yellow building, this hospital, unrelieved save for its log-gia, its painted frieze of earthenware, anda rickety cross to denote its pious the wards 1 can see to the wetsky again and a gable-end of vivid red andyellow. A thin black Christ on his crossstands up against this bright square of dis-tance, pathetic silhouette enough for me;reminder something sinister, you mightthink, for the sick folk inside. But not so;this is a crucifix, not a Crucifixion. This poorwooden Rood, bowing in the shade, speaksnot of high tragedy, but of the simple annalsof the poor again; not of St. John, but of 1 shall be called sentimental; butwith the band of garden colours before me 1cant get away from the streets and alleys. Iam not sure the craftsmen intended I hospital itself is low and square ; itis limewashed all over, and has the blindand beaten aspect of all Italian houses :â
