The Eighty-fifth Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, Infantry, was recruitedduring the months of August, September, October and November, 1861, fromfour counties in the extreme southwestern part of the State, all of which werebordered by the famous Mason and Dixon Line, viz.: Somerset, Fayette,Greene and Washington, the two former being separated from the State ofMaryland by the original Mason and Dixon survey, and the three latter fromVirginia (now West Virginia).
