The Captain attended dis-trict school during the winters,workingat home, and for the neighboring farm-ers, summers, until he was sixteenyears of age, when he engaged inteaching district school. Here he suc-ceeded admirably for one of his 1852 he entered the preparatory de-partment of Central College at Mc- Captain Robert Story. 371 Grawville, N. Y., where he remained until the fall of 1856, when he went to Ohioas Principal of Nelson Academy, in Portage county, lie remained in this posi-tion three years, his labors being crowned with excellent success. In 1800 he leftthe Academy and returned home to make arrangements for a tour of Europe ; butbefore his departure, the bombardment of Fort Sumter changed his whole determined to remain and serve his country.
