As I had thepleasure of making Senor Chaveros acquaintance in Mexico,and was told that this, his last treatise on the subject, isconsidered the best authority, I give the reader a short resumeof it. Senor Chavexo tells us that it was made in honour of the sun,in the reign of King Axayacatl in the year 13 acatl, whichcorresponds to 1479 of our era; it was originally placed hori-zontally in the grand temple of ]\Iexico, in the part calledQuauhfeilco. When the city was taken by Cortes, on the 13th ofAugust, 1521, and the grand temple destroyed, the calendar stonewas left in
