Scaligero Castle (Sirmione)


The Scaligero Castle is a fortress from the Scaliger era, an access point to the historic center of Sirmione, on Lake Garda. It is one of the best preserved castles in Italy. In 2019 it was the 22nd most visited attraction in Italy, with 308,459 visitors. The fortified entrance to the village was once equipped with a drawbridge over the canal which cuts across the entire length of the peninsula on which Sirmione is located. Access to the fortress was from the outside via a ravelin with a crenellated bridge and a second ravelin with a drawbridge over the canal; the dovetailed battlements testify to the first construction phase.
