Formation of the Moon, computer illustration. One theory on the Moon's formation is that it was the result of a nuclear explosion in the Earth's mantle. The explosion propelled debris into space, which then coalesced to form the Moon. Moon samples returned by the Apollo missions show that its composition is almost identical to that of Earth's. This wouldn't be expected if the Moon's formation came about as the result of another celestial body impacting Earth, as has also been hypothesised.
