Rideau Canal lock in the village of Merrickville, Ontario, Canada.

A Rideau Canal lock in the village of Merrickville, Ontario, Canada. The lock is part of the extensive canal waterway opened in 1832. The entire length is 202 kilometers or miles from Kingston to Ottawa. Today it is used primarily by pleasure craft as the locks are too small for cargo ships. Merrickville is a popular tourist destination with scenic locks, shops, pubs and a historic blockhouse museum. It has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
