Mosquito head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a male Culex quinquefasciatus mosquito. Its large compound eyes (pink) can be seen at upper left and right. Its feathery antennae protrude from between them, with its sensory palps visible at lower centre. The antennae of the females are considerably less bushy than those of the males. The needle-like proboscis used for feeding is not seen. Only the female mosquitoes feed on blood, the males feeding on nectar and other plant juices.
