On the same range of hills, at its westernextremity, the Santa Clara Mining Company,of Baltimore, has opened a mine called theGuadalupe, the product of which for theyear 1860 was about 200,000 lbs. The total prwluction of the quicksilvermines, from the beginning of 1853 to theclose of 1858, was about 177,578 flasks, or13,318,350 lbs. In 1866, the Californiamines produced 3,505,878 lbs, and in 1867,3,810,957 lbs. Litigation has preventedmost of them from being fully worked. 7- ~. lU MINING INDUSTRY OF THE UNITED STATES. METALLURGIC TREATMENT. From cinnabar not contaminated withstrange metals, the method of obtaining thefluid mercury is very simple. In the earlyworkings of the New Almaden mine, theclean ores were placed in the common trypots, such as are used by the whalers, anda cover being tightly luted on, a fire wasstarted under them, and the mercurial vaporsescaped through a tube inserted in the lidand were condensed in cold vessels. After-ward furnaces were constructed in brick-workupon a large scale, each one provided with achaml)or or oven 7 feet long, 4 feet wide, and5 feet high, corresponding to the chamberof the revcrberatory furnaces ; and into thiswas introduced a charge of 10,000 lbs. ofclean ore separated from tlie poorer portionsafter the whole had been broken up.
