DELTA PHI THE Delta Phi Fraternity may justly, and not without pride, lay claim tobeing one of the first to inaugurate Greek Letter Secret Society life inAmerican colleges. It was founded at Union College, on November 17. 1827,and was the third to be there established, thus being the third oldest in thiscountry. Shortly after the foundation of Delta Phi controversy arose amongstthe students of Union College as to the desirability of secret societies. Openwar was declared against them and the three fraternities were summonedbefore the faculty of Union College to show cause why they should not be dis-banded. The defense devolved largely on Delta Phi. At that time it was thecustom for college boys to wear distinctive caps, without brims. On the frontof this cap the fraternity pin was worn.
