The parts of The Grand Menhir Brisé (the large broken menhir) near the small town of Locmariquer in the south of Brittany.

The Grand Menhir Brisé consists of four huge pieces of rock that originally formed a standing stone over 20 metres high and weighing 280 tonnes, erected about 4500 BC. Geologists believe that the stone came from quarries over 10 km away. Opinion is divided as to how the stone was transported - by sea or overland? opinion is also divided as to when it was broken. The two strongest theories are that (1) it was broken deliberately by local people a few centuries after its erection and (2) it fell during a minor earthquake sometime between 1659 and 1725.
