The cutting tool is set for the desireddepth of cut, leaving about 1/64 in. ofstock on a side to be removed with thereamer. The lathe is started on the backgears and the cylinder-block is movedback slowly to meet the cutting tool bymoving the tool UAMPiHG SfAAPS5PAC£R BLOCKSCrUNDCK CASTING ^^^ ij SORING BAD OUlOeaORiNG BAR. Boring-Bar Guide and Method of Fasten-ing It with Clamps A special reamerthe cylinder afterthe boring cut was completed. This wasmade of a tool steel disk having sixteencutting teeth milled on it and forced ona cast-iron bushing which was a goodfit on the boring-bar. The boring-barwas machined from a piece of machinerysteel \]A. in. in diameter. In assembling the parts, the first stepwas to put the centering disk into thecylinder interior and then locate thecylinder carriers and boring-bar centering disk was an easy push fitin the cylinder interior and, of course, held the boring-bar in the center. Whenthe cylinder carrier was clanipcd to thebase flange of the cylinder-block, andthe centering disk was backed out andits place taken by the boring tool, the cut started straight. Absoluteparallelism of the boring-bar with thecylinder walls was secured by i)utlingthe centering disk at the head end ofthe cylinder and then adjusting thicentering sc
