From a specimen in the possession of the lateSir Victor Horsley, 74 PATHOLOGY It will be recognized that every grade of severity, aciitenessor chronicity of this continued excitation-process may occur, aswell as every grade of resultant thyroid defect, dependent nodoubt upon the nature and dose of the toxic excitant and thecoexistence of other influences which excite and ultimatelyimpair thyroidal activity. Ultimate recovery or ultimate celldeath will also to a great extent be influenced by the coexistenceof the other factors to which reference has been made in thepreceding sections. The changes in the foetal gland which give rise to cretinism, are essentiallly the same as those just described (figs. 25, 64),and are due to toxic agencies acting through the medium of thematernal blood.
