The wholeorgan is flattened, the tip of the nose being wo-inkled into three ormore folds. The long bones are especially affected by the lesions of late heredi-tary syphilis, the tibia being most frequently affected. The lesionmay consist in an osteoperiostitis, a gummatous osteoperiostitis, ora gummatous osteomyelitis. If osteoperiostitis is present, there are diffuse swelling and thick-ening of the bone—the so-called sabre-like deformity (Fig. 98). Thisprocess may affect the long bones of the upper extremities. Thegummatous lesions of osteoperiostitis form numerous irregular painfulswellings on the bone. Gummata are present on the flat bones of thecraniimi. ^Yhen these break down, the destructi\-e processes may. This form of syno\-itis is generallybilateral. One of my cases, a child fi-\e years of age, gave no historyof sj^philis. The radius on both sides was affected by osteoperiostitis(Fig. 99). The joints may be deformed by osteophytic growthsinvolving the epiphysis or head of the bone. Ear.—The ear is affected by an otitis with destruction of the ossicles, and even by mastoid disease. In other cases deafness supervenes with-out premonitory symptoms. Skii) and ihicous Membranes.—The skin and mucous membranesshow certain stigmata in the form of cicatrices of recent or old ulcera-tions. These may exist on any part of the body, but are especiallycharacteristic on the vermilion border of the lips and at the corners
