Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer installed on the International Space Station (ISS), computer illustration. The Alpha or AMS-02 magnetic spectrometer is a particle physics experiment installed on board the ISS since 2011. It consists of a set of detectors for characterising the particles and antiparticles of cosmic rays set around a high-power magnet. The instrument is installed on the 108-meter long beam that supports the solar panels, radiators of the thermal control system and various scientific equipment of the space station. The axis of the detector is inclined by 10 degrees with respect to the vertical axis of the station so that particles that enter the sensitivity cone of the instrument do not pass through the solar panels.
