George John Romanes (1848-1894), Canadian-born English naturalist. Romanes was a close friend of Charles Darwin and wrote books extending and supporting Darwin's ideas on evolution. Two such books were 'Animal Intelligence' (1881) and 'Mental Evolution in Man' (1888). It was at Cambridge that he came first to the attention of Charles Darwin. The two remained friends for life. Later hand colouring.
