The breakwaters protrude directly Northwards into the North Sea each side of the mouth of the river Esk at Whitby, North Yorkshire. The breakwaters continue from the East and West piers and reduce the power of the waves that enter Whitby harbour. Due to their location, the piers and breakwaters are photogenic at sunset and sunrise. This photograph was taken from the East pier and includes the lights at the end of the breakwaters. I went to the pier late in the evening before sunset as the sky looked very promising. The sun was strong and there were many interesting clouds passing overhead. Unfortunately the clouds gathered and obscured the sun so I was unable to take the photograph that I had in mind. However, the clouds were thin enough to let some interesting light though. To add to the atmosphere and to make the photograph more serene, I used a slow shutter speed to soften the waves and blur the clouds to give a sense of calm movement. However, in reality this was not the case as sea was quite rough and the wind was strong.
