RAU were commissioned to design a new office and educational centre for the Apenheul Foundation, linking Apenheul Primate Park and the Berg en Bos public park. An key function was to stimulate interest in a sustainable future. RAU produced a building in the form of a 150 metre snaking tail (hence the name De Staart, or The Tail), with panoramic glass elements and a timber frame resting on 29 massive native larch beams. The building is designed to be carbon neutral: thanks to concrete core activation and a geothermal heat pump, no radiators or air conditioning are needed, and heat generated by people and equipment is recycled. The building houses offices on the first floor, a 350-seat underground auditorium, an exhibition area and veterinary clinics.
