The principal difficulty is to avoid a notchat the lip margin, and various methods have been proposedto overcome the difficulty. Malgaignes operation, shownin figures 131, 132, 133, consists in making the incisionsfrom the margins of the cleft outward to near the skinline of the lip. The flaps thus made are turned down and thefree margins adjusted. If the flaps are too long they may 310 OPERATION FOR HARE LIP 311 be trimmed back so as not to project beyond the lip line afterrepair takes place. It is better to allow some projections.
