Poisonous spines of a crown of thorns starfish. These poisonous spines belong to the crown of thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci). They can cause long-term injuries to those badly stung by the starfish, even resulting in chronic arthiritis in joints close to the sting. Crown of thorns feed on live corals and outbreaks of the predator can devastate reefs. Photographed in Manokwari, West Papua in Indonesia, Asia.
