Reminiscences of the old fire laddies and volunteer fire departments of New York and Brooklyn. . l such things, and it seemsthat it takes money to get any work under the city government, nomatter how unimportant the place is. Bracken has honorable discharges from both the Fire and PoliceDepartments. 604 Reminiscences of the Old Fire Laddies John Dunlavev is another old-timer, and joined Hook andLadder No. 4 in 1863. For a number of years he represented thatcompany in the board of trustees, and remained in that capacityuntil the disbandment of the volunteer force. Mr. Dunlavey is athorough gentleman in manner, and is an especial favorite with oldvamps, with whom he ran to fires more than twenty years ago. Michael F. Loftus will be readily remembered by old fireladdies who ran with the machine twenty-five years ago. In Octo-ber, 1858, he joined Engine 20, and performed active and merito-rious service for a period of five years, when, in 1863, he the latter year he took a prominent part in the organizationof Hook and Ladder No. 4, and was unanimously elected foreman,. Hon. Thomas Cleary. serving as such until the disbandment of the Volunteer company he commanded was one of the last to be mustered outof service. Mr. Loftus is still remembered by old vamps, and is as enthusias-tic as ever regarding old-time fire matters. He is an agreeable gentleman, a representative New-Yorker, andhas a host of friends who regard him as a man of many traits worthyof being emulated.
