Twas a young and beautiful morningwith a cloudless sky, this beginningof the twenty-seventh Sun of theeleventh Moon of the Old was less than a quarter aftersix, and the striped canvas of thenative gunboat had been noise-lessly struck and everything madesnug and smart in ten minutes time. The manin the prow was getting the black cannon ready, andthe sun was rising back of (bang went the cannon !)the city. The echo as it rolled over the river and upthe opposite mountain side was reinforced by a secondand then a third shot. Thus my honourable country and myself were honoured. The bamboo mooring linewas quickly slipped, and in a jiffy we were well outinto the stream.
