In1857 he sold his interest in this paper and tookeditorial charge of the Portland Daily was a delegate to the first Republican NationalConvention, and on his return to Augusta madehis first appearance as a public speaker in a reportof its proceedings. On his election to the MaineLegislature, in 1858, he quitted journalism, whichhad been an efilicient instructor in political! knowl-edge. In the same year he became Chairman of (.078). The succeeding events of Mr. Blaines life andhis conspicuous public services belong to tlie rec-ords of statesmanship rather than to those of lit-erature. They may be briefly summed up thus :He served four years in the Maine Legislature,two of them being Speaker of the House ; from1863 to 1876 he was a member of Congress in theHouse of Representatives, serving as Speaker forsix years. He was then transferred to the Senate,and was subsequently elected for the term expir-ing in March, 1883. Twice he had been a candidatefor nomination to the Presidency, falling short inthe first instance by only twenty-seven votes. Onthe election of Mr. Garfield he was appointedSecretary of State, but he resigned the office soonafter the Presidents death in 1882. In 1884 published the first volume of his work,Tive
