Joseph Pujol. Artwork of Joseph Pujol (1857- 1945), the French entertainer known as \Le Petomane\" (The Fartiste), performing his stage act. Pujol achieved fame for his flatulence, which he used to do impressions of noises such as ripping cloth and animal calls. He also used his flatulence to play a flute and extinguish gas lamps. Pujol was so flatulent because he was able to draw air up through his anus and expel it. Audiences found his flatulence, combined with his deadpan delivery and formal attire, hilariously funny. His act made him his fortune during the 1890s and 1900s, but he retired from entertainment after World War I. Image from 1893."
