Scenes of a trade: charcoal burners. Woodcut, 1500/01. From Les Ordonnances de Paris. Iron working, blacksmithing, brick making, glass making, foundry work such as casting bells and cannons, gold and silversmithing, all used huge quantities of charcoal.
