I VEGETABLES AND I FRUITS DEPARTMENT LOCATION OF GBAFE HOUSE. I am enclosing a sketch of my new range of even-span houses, which have just been completed and are modern in every way. As the sketch indicates, the houses do not run straight east and west, but slant a little to the south at the east end. For convenience of ., description, however, I will suppose that they run east and west. There are three main hou"B$s, but each house is divided, crosswise, irito three sec- I tions. The east section of the north house will be xised for tomatoes; the middle section of the same house will be used for grapes; the west section, for cucumbers. The sections in the next house, mentioned in the same order, from east to west, are for chrys- anthemums, beans and palms. The south house will be used for carnations, roses and pot plants; that is, the carna- tions will be at the southeast corner of the range. You understand, then, that the mid- dle section of the north house is to be used as the grape house. I wish to know whether the proposed location of the houses will have any effect on the growing of the grapes in the winter season. The heating and watering sys- tems are perfect. J. W. S.—Mich. I do not quite gather from your sketch whether or not the houses are closely connected. If they- are, the location of the grape house is not of the best for winter forcing, if by that you mean extremely early forcing. The section intended for roses, in the south house, would have been much better for extra early work. If, however, you do not wish to start your vines be- fore February 1, the present location will answer well. It will answer also for earlier forcing, but will not be quite so good as if located at the south side of the range. C. W. f
