A hypnotherapist with a young subject. Hypnosis is a trance-like state, characterised by extreme Suggestibility. Here the hypnotherapist has suggested to the subject that he has a balloon tied to his right hand. The subject's right arm has raised accordingly. Although still the centre of much controversy, hypnotherapy has been shown to be of some benefit. Psychotherapists use hypnosis to enable patients to access the memory of past traumatic events that have been repressed by their conscious mind. Other uses are in the treatment of phobias, panic attacks, anxiety and addictive behaviour (eg smoking).
