Ferris wheel. This is the Firth Wheel, a ferris wheel that was constructed for the California Midwinter International Exposition, that took place in San Francisco, USA, from January to July 1894. Named after its designer, J. Kirk Firth, this ferris wheel was metres across. It had 16 carriages that could hold ten people each, taking 20 minutes to complete a rotation. It was later relocated to Sutro Heights, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It stayed in use for some 20 years before being scrapped. This photograph was published circa 1894.
