These precautions to secure safetyfrom fire extend to the arrangementand installation of the electrical appa-ratus and the electrical wiring. Forthe lighting circuits a flexible steelconduit is used, and a special junctionbox has been designed. This featureis illustrated herewith. On the sideand upper roofs, over these conduits for the lighting circuits, a strip of sheet iron is securely nailedto the roof boards before the canvas is applied; the entire un-der portion of the car flooring is covered with electrobestos, and the wires are carried in ducts moulded into suitable forms. INTERIOR NEW INTERBOROUGH CAR made from the same material. The pump box under the car islined with steel. Special precautions have been taken with theinsulation of the wires, the specifications calling for, first, alayer of paper, next, a layer of rubber, then a layer of cottonsaturated with a weatherproof compound, and outside of this alayer of asbestos. The hangers supporting the rheostats underthe car body are insulated with wooden blocks, which are sub-jected to a special process, being dried out in an oven and thensoaked in an insulating compound, and covered with y] board. The rheostat boxes themselves are also insu-lated from the angle-iron supporting them. Where the wirespass through the flooring they are hermetically sealed to pre-vent the admission of dust and dirt. An idea of the construction of the flooring can be gained - Plate of Steel
