Old engraving of Hungerford Market, viewed from the River Thames, c. 1840. It was a produce market situated at Charing Cross on the Strand, London, England. Two different buildings were constructed on the same site - the first in 1682. The site was originally Hungerford House which burnt down in 1669. The first market building was replaced by a new Italianate one designed by Charles Fowler, which opened in 1833. Charing Cross railway station was built on the site, opening in 1864.
