His descendants formany generations were farmers and known for their ster-ling integrity of character. By the death of his father,Moses N. Twombly, Horatio was thrown upon his ownresources at the age of eleven, but proved himself more thana match for adversity. By working on the farm in thesummer and teaching school during the winter he wasenabled to gain a preparatory education in South BerwickAcademy and entered Dartmouth College at the age of nine-. HORATIO N. TWOMBLY. teen. He defrayed his college expenses by teaching duringvacations and after a brilliant course graduated in 1854,standing second in a class of sixty graduates. He wentWest and took charge of a private school numbering 300pupils, at Waukegan, 111. During his sojourn in that townhe studied law and edited the VVaukei^an Gazette. While located in Prescott Mr. Twomblyedited the Prescott Tninscript and at the same time wasmade Lieutenant Colonel of the Wisconsin Militia.
