MOSQUITOES 4ND BLACK FLIES. 141 came on to rain, and tlie fish ceased to rise. This river had not been netted, and was full of fish, and I have no doubt first-rate sport might liave been had there, l)ut our short stay pre- vented any further enjoyment of it. One of the objections to fishing in Newfound- land is the difficulty of getting to the best places, as the coastal steamers do not necessarily call at them. A small coaster might be easily hired by a party of sportsmen, and probably good sport enjoyed; but everything in the shape of provisions, &c., including a tent, must be taken, as no sort of accommodation can be found on iiiiy part of the coast. The mosquitoes and black flies are a very great nuisance during the summer months ; but the same applies to all the rivers in Canada, Nova Scotia, Norway, &c., and although undoubted- t ly a great drawback, they are not sufficient to deter a keen angler from enjoying his favourite pastime. We found the best remedy to be Stockholm tar and oil, or carbolic and oil— twenty parts of the latter to one of the former —the Hies Inizz round, but they don't hanker lifter it. As to veils, I wouldn't be bothered.
