So many of the late varieties were believed to have been killed by freezing that a short supply of blooms was looked for, but even some of the early varieties came in. All the blooms were soft and extremely hard to handle, but it was a condition over which the j;ro\vers had no control. Roses were likewise overplentiful and in about the same shape as peonies. Carnation grow- ers whose crops were in cut thousands. It was like Christmas time with these growers. The difficulty of handling stock was what made things so unpleas- ant for wholesalers and retailers, and the holiday's falling on Monday added to the discomfiture in shipping orders.
