In L742 was erectedthe Washington Hotel, a Que building at the foul of Iboadw ay. which formedllic residence of Sir William Howe and other eminent men connected with thehistory of the city. The flrsl theater was opened in LTtfl, and in Ki>4 SandyHook was lirst provided with a lighthouse. We can now pass over the intervening years, during which the growth ofthe city steadily increased, until we come to the period of the beginning of. SEVENTH REGIMENT ARMORY the present century. Certainly the most important building erected duringthat decade was the present existing City Hall, of which a fine engraving willbe found on page :!4:>. This building was commenced in the year 1803 andcompleted 1S1\!. It was originally placed in a tine and extensive park, wellplanted with trees. This has now been considerably diminished in size. It istwo hundred and sixteen feet in length, one hundred and five feet in breadth,and lifty-one feet high. It cost five hundred and fifty thousand dollars, andundoubtedly reflects great credit upon its originators. The building consistsof two stories, in addition to basement and attic floors, and contains theMayors office, the City Library, the chamber of the Common Council, andvarious other offices of the city authorities. 1014 OUR W 1 K E M E N.
